Why I’m Obsessed with Capturing Generational Family Photos
I’m all about generational family photos, and here’s the thing: so many people forget to include their parents or grandparents, or worse—they never get professionally photographed at all. To me, that’s a huge missed opportunity. These are the people with the stories, the wisdom, the history—and they deserve to be in the frame, too.
Generational photos aren’t just about getting everyone together for a picture. It’s about capturing the connections that run deeper than just a smile. There’s something beautiful about seeing three or more generations in one shot. Those photos are an instant reminder of where you come from, the hands that built the foundation, and the faces that shaped who you are. When you look back at them, you don’t just see a family—you see the love, the legacy, and the moments that will carry on long after we’re gone.
When I shoot these sessions, I don’t want anyone feeling stiff or awkward. I want everyone to feel like themselves, whether it’s making sure the kids are having fun or getting grandma to relax and feel like a beauty queen. It’s about capturing who they are right in that moment—their personalities, their relationships, their little quirks.
One day, when the kids are older and the grandparents aren’t around anymore, they’ll look at these photos and feel that connection again. It’s about giving future generations a piece of the past they never got to experience firsthand. It’s about honoring those who came before, and making sure they’re not forgotten.
This is why I’ve fallen in love with generational family photos, preserving a piece of your family’s soul for years to come. It’s about showing your kids and their kids where they came from, and giving them something real to hold onto long after the moment has passed.
